"Where do you keep getting these weirdo shirts?" -Someone who doesn't understand your shirt

It Is August and We Are Already Doing Halloween Shirts

It Is August and We Are Already Doing Halloween Shirts

It is the second of August. The weather outside is openly hostile, nobody has voluntarily thought about a pumpkin in nine months, and we are already putting Halloween shirts on the website. We know. Somewhere near you there is a store stacking cinnamon brooms next to the sunscreen, and we have joined them, and we would like to explain ourselves before you judge us too harshly.

The holiday shirt has the worst schedule in retail

Every other design in the shop has an unlimited window. A joke about coffee works in March, in July, and at your cousin's wedding. A Halloween shirt gets roughly three usable weeks, and one of those weeks is the one where everybody is too busy to shop for anything. Miss that window and the shirt sits folded in a drawer for eleven months waiting on its single day, like an understudy who never once goes on.

The math is annoying, but it is real

Here comes the part nobody enjoys hearing. Shirts get printed when they are ordered, and then they have to travel. So if you decide on October 28th that you want a Halloween shirt, you are not really buying a Halloween shirt. You are buying a very seasonal November shirt. The people who look effortlessly festive on the 31st are not spontaneous and they are not lucky. They planned it in August, quietly, the way the rest of us plan taxes.

What actually moves this early

Not the loud stuff. The August buyer is a specific creature, and they reliably pick designs that can survive outside of their own holiday:

  • Bats. Technically just an animal. Wearable across the entire autumn with no explanation required.
  • Pumpkins. A vegetable. Shows up in September, stays through Thanksgiving, and nobody has ever questioned it.
  • A cat in a hat. Still, first and foremost, a cat.
  • A moon and some trees. Reads as spooky in October and as pleasant nature appreciation the other eleven months.
  • Actual costume jokes. These are wonderful and they get exactly one day of work per year. Buy them with your eyes open.

We call these ones spooky adjacent, and they are the most efficient purchase in the entire seasonal category. Halloween enough on the day itself, vague enough on November 3rd, when the decorations come down and everybody else's costume shirt goes into hibernation until next fall. One purchase buys you a holiday plus a whole season, which is the closest thing to a financial strategy this website is ever going to offer you.

Our actual defense

Yes, it is early. Yes, this is seasonal creep, and yes, we are participating in it enthusiastically. The alternative is posting these in the third week of October, far too late to be useful to anyone, and then pretending we had not been sitting on a folder of bat drawings since June. We would rather be early and mildly embarrassing than punctual and completely useless.

Go be suspiciously prepared

The Halloween and fall designs are up now, months before any reasonable person needs them, sitting right beside the shirts that have nothing to do with October. Pick the one you would still happily wear on a Tuesday in November, and then enjoy being the person who somehow always has the correct shirt ready. Nobody needs to know it took planning.
